Hemp Bedding for Chickens: AubiChick, Aubiose, and Deep Litter
With just one or two bags of our 20kg / 44lb hemp per year, you can easily bed 12-13 chickens in a hygienic environment. The structure and composition of hemp actively trap moisture and ammonia precursors. It keeps the coop fresh and dry. The dust levels of the bedding are very low. Using hemp is respiratorily friendly.
We advocate the deep-litter method for the best results, which we discuss further here.
Basically the goal of a deep litter system is to create a composting environment in your chicken coop. This is easy to do with hemp bedding. The carbon from the hemp hurd and the nitrogen from the poultry manure create the perfect environment for balanced composting and a healthy environment for birds. Usually just a light addition of hemp here or there is all you need to maintain a hygienic environment in your coop. You can do a full cleanout once a year and it will produce excellent compost.
Why it works
The secret to making good compost is the right balance between carbon and nitrogen. Hemp is the ultra carbon and the ultra-absorber. And chicken manure is perfect nitrogen. With the right combination of bedding and manure your chicken coop is already a perfect compost producing factory. It already has the perfect balance between carbon and nitrogen. The sign of imbalance is if the coop starts to smell, in which case you should add a bit more carbon (hemp). The same rules that apply to composting apply to keeping a good chicken coop!
Our hemp chicken coop products
We offer two versions of hemp bedding for chickens. AubiChick is a finer & softer version product made by Aubiose. The benefit of AubiChick is that it is extra comfortable for their feet.
However, the original Aubiose brand is also often used for poultry. We discuss the pros and cons of each brand here. Basically if you, yourself, are dust sensitive, you might like using our Aubiose brand, because it’s our lowest dust option. But we do still highly recommend the Aubichick brand because it is super comfortable and hygienic in the coop.
For the birds themselves they don’t usually mind the mildly higher amount of dust versus Aubiose.
In other words, your birds might actually prefer the AubiChick brand, but you yourself might actually prefer the Aubiose brand, and your birds will be happy with either of them.
